El Nino Season Approaching?
Scientists predict that we are in for an El Nino sequence this year. This means we should be preparing for heavier rains than normal. Since California doesn’t see heavy rain that often, many property owners and homeowners are unprepared for the problems erosion could cause. Slope control and proper drainage are essential to preventing erosion on a sloped piece of land.
Erosion is a natural process where soil is moved by water or wind. You can easily see this in action when you pour water on a pile of dirt. Soil rolls downhill, and channels are dug where the water finds the path of least resistance. Now, imagine what happens when a hillside or slope on your property is hit with a large amount of water. Unless proper drainage has been installed by professionals like Carty
Construction, there is a good chance that you could end up with a land slide that would damage your property or home. Luckily, there are a few things that can be done to prevent erosion on slopes during heavy El Nino Rains.
1. Concrete V Ditches- Ditches can be installed on the slope to catch and redirect the water so that it does not shear down the slope, taking the soil with it.
2. Catch Basins and Storm Drains- A system of surface Basins and drains can be installed to contain and move water safely to the sewer system, and away from the hillside.
3. Retaining Walls- Correctly designed and built retaining walls will save your property from sliding into your home, or your neighbor’s home. These don’t have to be ugly concrete blocks; a retaining wall can be both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
4. Hillside Plantings- Certain plants may be able to control some erosion, but mainly if used in conjunction with a drainage system.
The first step is to have a proper drainage inspection done on your property. We will assess your slope to see if it drains properly, or if it is at risk of sliding. After this we will make a proposal to fix any problems that exist before the rains start. Be prepared for El Nino season.
